Building - Daryl MacDonald of Treehouse Workshop and Ian Jones of Treebird Construction

Learn how to create a functional platform that connects safely and securely to the tree. Participants will have the opportunity to learn through demonstrations and hands-on experience, helping to build a platform that will become the foundation for TreeHouse Point’s next treehouse. The building project integrated with this workshop will be the focal point of the symposium.

The Design Workshop - Pete Nelson of Treehouse Workshop, designer and author

Having selected your tree, what next? This workshop will get you acquainted with the design process, from initial conceptual sketches to finished construction drawings.

Rigging - Jake Jacob and Ian Weedman of Treehouse Workshop

Here you can learn the set-up and use of simple yet ingenuously designed mechanisms that allow you to hoist heavy loads into trees, an all-important technical skill that enables treehouse building without the use of heavy equipment.

Climbing - Jim Burgess of Snohomish Arborists (and others)

The going up and going down...a crew of experts will show the art of single and double rope climbing.

Engineering - Jake Jacob along with a special guest engineer TBA

Become informed about tree attachment technology and how the weight of the house can sit safely and securely within the tree’s limbs by using the proper connection.

Arborculture - Scott D. Baker of Tree Solutions

The subject of discussion will be the very trees themselves. Learn about how they grow and change, and in particular, how they react to the structures being built within them over time. Discussion will also touch upon what to look for when selecting a tree and how to keep your tree strong and healthy well into the future.

Tree Viability - Philip van Wassenaer of Urban Forest Innovations Inc.

Investigate the innate structural system of a tree comprised of roots, trunk and branches, an analysis of which can serve to indicate the potential longevity of your treehouse.

Net-style Tree Platforms - Sarah Jefferson

Learn from a pro who has been creating fascinating, functional and funky tree-nets for years. Cinched between trunks and branches, find out how to make a comfortable fishing net lounge big or small, high in the branches or low to the ground.

Treehouse Tour - Jake Jacob and Pete Nelson

Visit local treehouses designed by Pete Nelson and built by TreeHouse Workshop.

State of the Art - Jake Jacob and Pete Nelson

What has gone well and what has gone not so well in the treehouse world over the last year. Anyone with a story is welcome to sign up and speak during this informal conversation at the Saturday night dinner.
